Course overview

The NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is one of the most popular and highly valued degree-level qualifications for health and safety professionals internationally.

The International Diploma increases candidates' ability to help organisations make sensible and proportionate decisions in managing risks. This supports their business objectives and regulatory requirements – delivering positive change in the modern workplace.

The NEBOSH Diploma covers the practical skills that are essential to health and safety professionals. We assess candidates’ ability to apply their knowledge in real-world settings and teach them how to deliver positive change in the workplace.

The NEBOSH International Diploma course is divided into four units, which can be studied individually or purchased in full, via distance learning.   

Who is this course suitable for?

NEBOSH International Diploma is ideal for health and safety professionals wishing to advance their career outside the UK. This includes safety managers, advisors and consultants.

There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH International Diploma, however, we recommend first completing one of the following courses:

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate

Course programme

These units can be completed in any order over a period of 5 years, and each unit is individually assessed by a written 3 hour exam and certificates given for each unit.

ID1 – Know – workplace health and safety principles

ID2 – Do – controlling workplace health issues

ID3 – Do – controlling workplace health issues

  • Each assessment is a substantial undertaking. We anticipate that it will take you around 60 hours to complete the ND1 assignment and 40 hours each for the ND2 and ND3 case studies. The time-period given for you to complete each assessment reflects this: Unit ND1: 6 weeks (30 working days) Unit ND2: 4 weeks (20 working days) Unit ND3: 4 weeks (20 working days)

When combined with further professional development, the NEBOSH Diploma meets the standards required to achieve Chartered Safety Practitioner (CMIOSH) status. 

On completion of the NEBOSH International Diploma, you will be entitled to use “DipNEBOSH” after your name and apply for Graduate Membership with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (GradIOSH). It also allows full membership to the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

Next steps

The NEBOSH International Diploma also acts as a stepping-stone to postgraduate study. 


The assessments focus on the application of knowledge to help you prepare for the health and safety tasks faced in the workplace.

We are also able to facilitate exams in major cities located all over the world at British Council venues, however please note that additional charges may apply for this service.

Unit DNI is assess by a 8,000-word workplace-based assessment that tests the practical application of knowledge gained in units A, B and C. The assessment for Unit D involves undertaking a full health and safety audit of a company of your choosing (ideally your own).


  • When and how will I receive my NEBOSH results?

    Results are notified by NEBOSH after completing the course. NEBOSH send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams. Your certificates will arrive via post after the results have been announced.

  • When and how will I receive my NEBOSH certificate/diploma?

    Your certificate or diploma is sent to you by Phoenix via a postal service after the results have been announced. 

  • What happens if I fail the NEBOSH assessment?

    The Phoenix Pass Pledge will cover your additional studies, but you retake the exams at your own cost. 
  • Are there any entry requirements for NEBOSH National or International Diploma?

    There is no formal entry requirement. However, achievement of the NEBOSH National General Certificate, or a direct equivalent (level 3), is highly recommended before undertaking the Diploma course. 

    An appropriate standard of English language is also essential for students to understand the syllabus and articulate the concepts it contains. NEBOSH recommends a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 or higher.
