What is the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate?

The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate's new syllabus (launched 2021) is a highly valued and globally recognised qualification in environmental management. 

Developed by NEBOSH, the Environmental Management Certificate supplies content which is practical, while providing a rigorous course that equips candidates to effectively deal with environmental management daily. 

According to NEBOSH, around two-thirds of health and safety practitioners now deal with environmental management as part of their overall day-to-day responsibilities at work. As such, the knowledge gained from the NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management is vital for organisations wishing to avoid prosecution, litigation and loss of reputation while upskilling their workforce.

The Phoenix Pass Pledge 

Every Phoenix NEBOSH course entitles you to continue studying free of charge if you fail to meet the required standard in examinations. However, this is rarely necessary. Our pass rate for NEBOSH training courses is above industry average, with a high number of credits and distinctions. 

Typically, candidates who undertake NEBOSH environmental training have a responsibility for managing environmental issues as part of their work. However, it is also suitable for anyone who wishes to start pursuing or advancing a career in environmental management. 

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.   

How long does the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate take? 

The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate will involve a total of 34 taught hours, 25 hours private study and 8 hours on assessments. 

  • When studied through classroom, virtual classroom learning or in-house, the course is 5 days. 

  • When studied through E-learning, we recommend spending between 60 and 70 hours on the course. 

Our classroom course timings are 09:00-17:00 Monday - Friday.

The NEBOSH Environmental Certificate is comprised of two units of study: EMC1 and EMC2. 

Unit EMC1 – Environmental Management (Open Book Examination) 

  • Element 1: Foundations in environmental management 

  • Element 2: Environmental management systems 

  • Element 3: Assessing environmental aspects and impacts 

  • Element 4: Planning for and dealing with environmental emergencies 

Unit EMC2 – Assessing Environmental Aspects & Associates Impacts (Practical Application) 

  • Element 5: Controls of emissions to air 

  • Element 6: Control of environmental noise 

  • Element 7: Control of contamination of water resources 

  • Element 8: Control of waste and land use 

  • Element 9: Sources and use of energy and energy efficiency 

The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate covers the following key areas:

  • Justify environmental management in the workplace using ethical, legal and financial arguments, linking these to wider environmental issues including sustainable development

  • Recognise workplace activities which may be subject to environmental legislation or enforcement

  • Understand the requirements of, and work within, an environmental management system, whilst contributing to continual improvement

  • Assess environmental aspects and associated impacts, determining significant aspects and evaluating current controls

  • Support environmental emergency planning

  • Understand the importance of reducing environmental harm; identify sources of noise, air, and water pollution; and suggest suitable control measures

  • Understand the benefits and limitations of a range of energy sources, and suggest suitable measures to increase energy efficiency

The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate is assessed in two parts:

  • In Unit EMC1, candidates are assessed by an online written examination that they have 24 hours to submit. Within it, candidates must demonstrate their knowledge gained through the course.

  • Unit EMC2 features a practical assessment, which is carried out at the candidate’s workplace. The practical assessment must be submitted within 14 days of the exam date booking.

A unit certificate is issued denoting the achievement of each unit.

After that, a certificate award parchment is issued upon the completion of both units.

If you are booking the classroom course, your exam cost will be included within the price. If you are booking on to the e-learning course your exams will be an extra fee and will need to be booked separately.

Many candidates use the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate as a stepping-stone on their path to achieving the NEBOSH Diploma, a degree-level qualification which evidence candidates’ expertise as professionals in their field. 

  • When and how will I receive my NEBOSH results?

Results are provided by NEBOSH after completing the course. NEBOSH send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams. Your certificates will arrive after the results have been announced.

  • What happens if I fail the NEBOSH assessment?

The Phoenix Pass Pledge will cover your additional studies, but you retake the exams at your own cost. 

  • What level is the NEBOSH Environmental Certificate?

NEBOSH Certificates are level 3, which is equivalent to an A level qualification. NEBOSH Diplomas are level 6, which is equivalent to an Honours Degree.

  • Are there any entry requirements for NEBOSH Certificates?

There are no entry requirements, which makes a NEBOSH Certificate an ideal starting point for your health and safety training. Learners must have a suitable standard of English language to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.  

  • When and how will I receive my results and NEBOSH certificate?

NEBOSH send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams. Your certificates will arrive from Phoenix 10-12 weeks after the results have been announced.

  • Is the NEBOSH environmental certificate hard?

NEBOSH certificates require dedicated study hours, and can be challenging. However, so long as you have an interest in health, safety and the environment, as well as a strong understanding of English, you can complete the qualification.

  • What is the pass mark for the NEBOSH environmental certificate?

The pass mark for the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate's EMC1 assessment is 45%. The assessment for EMC2 is a practical which you either pass or fail. You need to pass in order to complete the qualification.
