What is the NEBOSH International Diploma?

The NEBOSH Level 6 International Diploma helps candidates make decisions when managing risks in a workplace setting. This supports the organisation's objectives and regulatory requirements, having a positive effect on the workplace's safety practices.

The NEBOSH International Diploma is ideal for health and safety professionals outside the UK wishing to advance their career. This includes safety managers, advisors and consultants. 

If you currently work or intend to base your career in the UK, the NEBOSH National Diploma may be a more suitable qualification. 

There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH International Diploma. However, we recommend first completing the NEBOSH International General Certificate or NEBOSH International Construction Certificate, as the Diploma syllabus assumes that learners will have this level of prior learning. 

A basic level of English, equivalent to International English Language Testing System 6.0 or higher, is also recommended so that students can understand course content, which is all delivered in English.

The qualification requires a minimum of 185 taught hours plus 144 recommended self-study hours and 80 assessment hours. 

When studied through distance learning Phoenix recommends spending a total of 400-450 hours on the course. Studying the Diploma through distance learning lets you work at your own pace, with the course materials sent directly to you. You'll be able to pause and resume you're learning whenever and wherever, offering you complete flexibility.

When studying the NEBOSH International Diploma online via e-Learning, students gain access to our specially designed, interactive diploma course. You can also book each unit individually, allowing you to study them when it suits you and in any order with our NEBOSH Diploma International Units.

The NEBOSH International Diploma course consists of three units. Each one can be completed separately and is assessed independently, with a certificate provided upon passing the exam for each unit. They are broken into 'Know' and 'Do', covering what a health and safety professional must know and do in the workplace respectively.

  • DN1 – Know – workplace health and safety principles 

  • DN2 – Do – controlling workplace health issues 

  • DN3 – Do – controlling workplace safety issues 

After gaining this qualification, candidates will have a firm grasp of all the following areas of knowledge: 

  • You will be able to advise your organisation on the types of legislation likely to apply to the organisation and how enforcement actions could apply; the relevance of the International Labour Organization’s conventions/recommendations to the organisation; how non-government bodies and standards could influence health and safety in the organisation.

  • You will be able to promote a positive health and safety culture by: gaining commitment and participation; and engaging, supporting, and influencing leaders (and others) to change attitudes and behaviour and make health and safety a priority.

  • You will be able to assess, develop and maintain individual and organisational health and safety competence.

  • You will be able to understand risk management including the techniques for identifying hazards, the different types of risk assessment, considerations when implementing sensible and proportionate additional control measures and developing a risk management strategy.

  • You will be able to develop and implement proactive and reactive health and safety monitoring systems and carry out reviews and auditing of such systems.

  • You will be able to continually develop your own professional skills and ethics to actively influence improvements in health and safety by providing persuasive arguments to workers at all levels.

  • You will be able to develop a health and safety policy strategy within your organisation (including proactive safety, Corporate Social Responsibility and the change management process).

  • You will be able to manage contractors and supply chains to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

  • You will be able to advise the organisation on a range of common workplace health issues/ hazards including how these can be assessed and controlled.

  • You will be able to advise the organisation on a range of common workplace safety issues/ hazards including how these can be assessed.

Each assessment is a substantial undertaking. We anticipate that it will take you around 40 hours to complete the DI1 assignment and 20 hours each for the DI2 and DI3 case studies. The time-period given for you to complete each assessment reflects this: 

  • Unit DI1: 4 weeks (20 working days) 

  • Unit DI2: 2 weeks (10 working days) 

  • Unit DI3: 2 weeks (10 working days)

The NEBOSH Diploma acts as a stepping-stone on the path to postgraduate study. Many universities accept the NEBOSH Diploma as their criteria for MSc-level courses, so it provides a clear route to masters-level postgraduate study.

Many Diploma graduates also apply for IOSH Certified Membership (CertIOSH) after they've acquired at least 2 years of relevant industry experience. IOSH Membership offers many benefits and is recognised globally as a sign of industry expertise. It can help you build connections with fellow professionals and further your career, wherever you live.

  • When and how will I receive my NEBOSH results?

Results are provided by NEBOSH after completing the course. NEBOSH send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams.

  • What happens if I fail the NEBOSH assessment?

The Phoenix Pass Pledge will cover your additional studies, but you retake the exams at your own cost. 

  • What level are NEBOSH qualifications?

NEBOSH Certificates are level 3, which is equivalent to an A level qualification. NEBOSH Diplomas are level 6, which is equivalent to an Honours Degree.

  • Are there any entry requirements for the NEBOSH Diploma?

There are no formal entry requirements, however, it is recommended you study a level 3 health and safety qualification before progressing to the Diploma, such as the NEBOSH International General Certificate. Learners must have a suitable standard of English language to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.  

  • Is this course recognised in South Africa?

The NEBOSH International Diploma teaches to international health and safety standards. As a result, it's recognised across the globe, including in South Africa.
