What is the NEBOSH Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety?

The NEBOSH Oil and Gas Certificate is a key qualification for supervisors, safety representatives, managers, and newly qualified health and safety advisors in the oil and gas industries, working both on and offshore.  

It builds on the knowledge acquired while studying a NEBOSH National or NEBOSH International Certificate, with industry-specific content focused on international oil and gas management standards and systems. The course provides practical hazard and risk assessment skills, ensuring that you can raise the standard of health and safety practices in your organisation.

The NEBOSH International Certificate in Oil and Gas is being withdrawn by NEBOSH and will no longer be delivered starting March 31st 2025. The content it covers is included in the NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management, making it the ideal alternative for those considering the course. New assessment submissions will also no longer be accepted as of September 30th 2026.

If you book the qualification before the closing date, March 31st 2025, then you'll have until September 30th 2026 to submit and pass the IOG1 Assessment. If you are not successful by this date, then you'll no longer be able to proceed with the qualification.

The NEBOSH Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety is ideal for managers, safety representatives and health and safety advisors who work in process industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals, both inside and outside the UK. 

The NEBOSH International Certificate in Oil & Gas Safety will involve a minimum of 34 taught hours and approximately 20 hours of private study and background reading. 

 
When studied through distance learning, we recommend spending 54 hours on the course. 

When studied in-house the course is 5 days.

The NEBOSH Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety consists of of five elements:

  • Element 1 Health, safety and environmental management in context. 

  • Element 2 Hydrocarbon process safety 1. 

  • Element 3 Hydrocarbon process safety 2. 

  • Element 4 Fire protection and emergency response. 

  • Element 5 Logistics and transport operations. 

After gaining this qualification, candidates will have a firm grasp of all the following areas of knowledge: 

  • Best practice and international standards 

  • Hydrocarbon processing health and safety 

  • Hazards inherent in the extraction, storage and processing of raw materials and products 

  • Risk management techniques used in the oil and gas industries 

  • Contractor management 

  • Fire and explosion controls in the oil and gas industries 

  • Marine and land logistics 

The NEBOSH Oil and Gas course is assessed by a two-hour written exam- IOG1. 

The NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety is not accredited by the SQA Accreditation. However, it is broadly comparable to Level 6/7 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF), comparable to RQF Level 4 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

  • When and how will I receive my NEBOSH results?

Results are provided by NEBOSH after completing the course. NEBOSH send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams. Your certificates will arrive after the results have been announced.

  • What happens if I fail the NEBOSH assessment?

The Phoenix Pass Pledge will cover your additional studies, but you retake the exams at your own cost. 

  • What level are NEBOSH qualifications?

NEBOSH Certificates are level 3, which is equivalent to an A level qualification. NEBOSH Diplomas are level 6, which is equivalent to an Honours Degree.

  • Are there any entry requirements for NEBOSH Certificates?

There are no entry requirements, which makes a NEBOSH Certificate an ideal starting point for your health and safety training. Learners must have a suitable standard of English language to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.  

  • When and how will I receive my results and NEBOSH certificate?

NEBOSH send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams. Your certificates will arrive from Phoenix 10-12 weeks after the results have been announced.
